1Password for Agents lets AI agents log in without seeing user passwords
1Password launched 1Password for Agents on October 22, letting users authorize AI agents to sign into accounts without exposing credentials. An agent sends a unique digital key to 1Password, the user approves an alert, and 1Password fills in the credentials. TechCrunch named Claude Duet, OpenAI's Dots and ChatGPT Work, Grok Bot, Meta's Muse and Town among the agents users can choose.
Key points
- Agents authenticate to 1Password with a unique digital key, and users approve each login alert.
- Named agents include Claude Duet, ChatGPT Work, Dots, Grok Bot, Muse and Town.
- 1Password has not disclosed pricing or plan tiers.
What happened: Password manager 1Password launched 1Password for Agents on Thursday, October 22. The service lets users authorize AI agents to log into their accounts without the agent ever seeing the username or password.
The details: When an agent tries to sign in, it sends a unique digital key to 1Password to confirm its identity. The user receives an alert and can approve the attempt, and 1Password then fills in the credentials on the agent's behalf. TechCrunch listed agents users can choose, including Anthropic's Claude Duet, OpenAI's Dots and ChatGPT Work, Grok Bot, Meta's Muse and agents from the startup Town. It was not reported which integrations are live and which are planned. 1Password said it is working with other companies to expand the service, and in a blog post called handing over a password a "common shortcut" that can leave sensitive information in places people no longer control. The company has not disclosed pricing or plan tiers.
Background: The same day, Axios reported that U.S. banks have begun detecting agent activity inside customer accounts and that most cannot tell whether it reflects user requests. A Chase spokesperson said customers "should not give their usernames and passwords to anyone."
What to watch: Whether banks and other services accept agent logins brokered this way, and how 1Password prices the feature.
Our take
Teams letting agents act in business accounts now have a way to grant access without pasting passwords into an AI tool.
