What happened: Anthropic filed for an initial public offering with the SEC on Monday, after weeks of leaked S-1 drafts, TechCrunch reported. The company plans to list under the ticker ANT.
The details: The filing shows revenue of $16.3 billion for the first half of 2026, up from $1.2 billion in the same period of 2025. The operating loss narrowed to $693 million from $2.1 billion. The net loss was $80.7 billion, which TechCrunch said was largely driven by noncash accounting adjustments tied to convertible debt. The company states it "may not achieve or sustain profitability in the future." As of the end of September, more than 11,900 customers were spending $100,000 or more a year, 1,900 were spending $1 million or more and about 250 were spending $10 million or more.
Background: Seven co-founders, including Dario and Daniela Amodei, will form a Founder LLC controlling 50.1% of shareholder voting power, which Anthropic says is meant to preserve its AI safety mission. The Long-Term Benefit Trust, set up in 2023, will be able to appoint most board members. TechCrunch noted the structure is controversial because public shareholders would have little practical control. The prospectus also says the technology could pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity."
What to watch: Anthropic has not disclosed how much it hopes to raise, the share price, its valuation, the exchange, the underwriting banks or when the listing will happen.
Our take
Teams that depend on Claude will get far more visibility into Anthropic's finances and risks, which helps with vendor due diligence.
