Replit CEO says the company is no longer working with Anthropic

Replit CEO Amjad Masad said onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt that the coding platform is no longer working with Anthropic, citing cost, partnership considerations and performance. He said Replit's benchmarks show OpenAI models performing better at building apps from scratch. An insider told TechCrunch the partnership was still in place.

Key points

  • Masad cited cost, partnership considerations and performance as reasons for leaving Anthropic.
  • He said Replit benchmarks show OpenAI models perform better at building apps from scratch.
  • An unnamed insider said the Anthropic partnership was still in place.

What happened: Replit CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad said on Thursday, onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt, that Replit is no longer working with Anthropic. He said the decision came down to several factors, including cost, partnership considerations and performance. Replit announced a partnership with OpenAI in August, and there had been no earlier public sign that it was ending its Anthropic relationship, TechCrunch reported.

The details: Masad said ChatGPT is "better now" and that Replit's internal and public benchmarks show OpenAI's models performing better at building vibe-coded applications from scratch. He did not share annual recurring revenue figures. He said enterprise made up about 2% of revenue last year and about 15% this year, and that more than 50% of revenue now comes from business customers.

Background: Replit sells a cloud platform for developing and deploying apps from a browser. Under the Anthropic partnership it used Claude models to run the platform, which reportedly helped grow its revenue significantly. TechCrunch noted that a late September blog post on Replit's website named Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and 5.1 models in Replit Agent's production environment.

What to watch: An insider familiar with the partnership, who asked not to be named, told TechCrunch the partnership was still in place, and the publication said it had contacted Replit for clarification. Masad also said AI agents need a "habitat" with orchestration, error recovery, sandboxing, networking, and identity and authorization before they can be deployed safely.

Our take

Teams building on Replit should confirm which models power Replit Agent today, since the vendor mix behind the product may be shifting.
