App of the Week

Notion

Workspace for docs, wikis and projects with AI agents and meeting notes.

Visit site

Notion is a workspace for docs, wikis, databases and projects that now runs its own AI agents on top of your team's content. It suits teams that already keep their knowledge in Notion and want AI to act on it, not just chat about it. If your work lives mostly in tickets or in a dozen other apps, look at the alternatives below first.

Each week we pick one tool from the AI App Hunters directory, look at what it actually does, and tell you who should buy it and who should skip it.

Key takeaways

  • Notion combines docs, wikis, databases and project tracking with AI agents, meeting notes and search across connected apps.
  • Custom Agents run on a schedule or a trigger, such as a new database page or a Slack message, and need the Business or Enterprise plan.
  • Pricing as of October 2026: Free, Plus at $10, Business at $20 per member per month, and custom Enterprise. Custom Agents then use Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 a month.
  • The full AI feature set starts on Business. Free and Plus only get a limited trial.
  • Best for teams whose documents and trackers already live in Notion.

What is Notion?

Notion started as a flexible workspace for pages and databases. Teams use it for wikis, project trackers, meeting notes and planning docs, all linked in one place.

The AI layer has grown into the main story. Notion's AI page now leads with "Meet your 24/7 AI team". In practice that covers five things:

  • Notion Agent, which Notion says "completes complex, multi-step tasks using context from Notion, your connected apps, and the web."
  • Custom Agents, which automate recurring team work in the background.
  • AI Meeting Notes, which transcribe and summarize meetings with "no bot needed".
  • Enterprise Search, which searches across connected apps such as Slack, Google Drive and GitHub. It is marked Beta on the pricing page.
  • Research Mode, which produces longer reports on a topic.

Who is Notion for?

Notion fits teams where the context AI needs is already written down in Notion.

  • Operations and project teams that run trackers and recurring reports in Notion databases.
  • Product and engineering teams that keep specs and decisions in Notion and code in GitHub.
  • Startups and mid-size companies that want one tool for wiki, docs and light project management.
  • Larger companies that need SAML SSO, SCIM and audit logs, which sit on Business and Enterprise.

What are Notion's standout features?

Custom Agents that run without being asked

This is the feature that sets Notion apart from a plain AI writing assistant. According to Notion's help center, a Custom Agent can run on a schedule ("daily, weekly, monthly, weekends only, and more") or on an event, such as "A page is added to a database" or "A property is updated in a database". It can also react to Slack messages, emoji reactions or mentions. Typical jobs are posting a weekly report or updating records in a tracker.

Since July 31, 2026, AI Meeting Notes can trigger Custom Agents, so a finished meeting can update a tracker and post a recap on its own.

Notion 3.7: skills and sub-agents

The September 15, 2026 release, Notion 3.7, added skills: reusable instructions that teach AI how your team works. Skills live in a shared library, can be run with / in agent chat, and can be downloaded to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other tools. The same release let Custom Agents call sub-agents, added GitHub and Amplitude connections through Custom MCP, launched a Notion Agents iOS app and put the Agent SDK into public beta.

Model choice and admin control

The model picker in 3.7 lists Opus 5, GPT-5.6 Sol and Kimi K3. Since September 9, 2026, workspace owners on Business and Enterprise can choose which models Notion Agent and Custom Agents may use, and set defaults. That matters if your security team has approved some providers and not others.

Security claims

Notion's AI page says it does not train on your data and that this is contractually prohibited. It lists SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001, GDPR and CCPA compliance, and HIPAA compliance on Enterprise. Business keeps data with LLM providers for 30 days. Enterprise gets zero data retention.

How much does Notion cost?

Here is what Notion's pricing page shows as of October 2026. The listed prices are per member per month, and the page says yearly billing saves up to 20%.

Plan Price AI features Other notable features
Free $0 Limited trial of Notion Agent, Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search and Research Mode 7-day page history, 5 MB uploads, 10 guests, blocks limited for 2+ members
Plus $10 Same limited trial 30-day page history
Business $20 Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search (Beta), Custom Agents, Research Mode 90-day page history, SAML SSO, private teamspaces
Enterprise Custom Everything in Business, zero data retention with LLM providers SCIM, audit log, Customer Success Manager

Custom Agents are "Free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits". The help center notes that premium models "spend credits at the model's own price" and that sub-agent hand-offs use credits too. Budget for credits on top of seats if you plan to run many agents.

What are Notion's limitations, and who should skip it?

  • AI is a Business feature. The real agent features start at $20 per member per month. Free and Plus are a trial.
  • Credits add a second bill. Custom Agents run on credits, and costs rise with premium models and sub-agents. Watch the credits dashboard in the first month.
  • Agents are only as good as your workspace. If your Notion is half empty or out of date, the agents have little to work with.
  • Enterprise Search is in Beta. If company-wide search is your main need, a dedicated search product may go deeper.
  • Not a full project management suite. Teams that need heavy workflows, sprints or service desks may outgrow it.

Skip Notion if your team does not already work in it and you only want an AI assistant. A general assistant or a dedicated tool will be quicker to adopt.

What are the best Notion alternatives?

Tool Best for Starting price (as of October 2026)
Notion Docs, wikis and trackers with built-in agents Free, paid from $10 per member per month
ClickUp Task-heavy project management with docs Free, paid from $7 per user per month billed yearly, AI add-ons from $9
Glean Company-wide AI search and agents across many apps Not public, demo required
Granola Meeting notes as a standalone tool Free, Business from $14 per user per month

ClickUp is the closer match if tasks are the center of your work. It sells AI separately, with Brain AI at $9 and Everything AI at $28 per user per month. Glean describes itself as "the Enterprise AI platform connected to your enterprise's data" and is the better fit when knowledge is spread across many systems. Our Glean review covers it in depth. For meeting notes alone, see Granola and our guide to the best AI meeting assistants for B2B teams.

Bottom line: is Notion worth it?

If your team already lives in Notion, the Business plan is one of the simplest ways to put AI agents to work on real company context. Custom Agents that run on schedules and triggers are the reason to upgrade, and the 3.7 skills release makes them easier to share across a team.

Start with one or two agents on a recurring job, such as a weekly status report, and track credit use for a month before rolling out more.
