Pick Synthesia if you are a larger company that needs the strongest security paperwork and wants to use avatars beyond video, for roleplay practice and surveys. Pick HeyGen if your main job is marketing, sales or localized video and you want the widest language list and the largest stock avatar library. Pick Colossyan if you build training courses and need quizzes, branching and SCORM without paying enterprise prices.

Key takeaways

  • All three have a free plan, and the paid entry point is close: Synthesia Starter and HeyGen Creator both cost $29 a month as of October 2026.
  • Colossyan Professional costs $59 a month billed yearly but includes 3 editor seats, interactive video and SCORM export.
  • HeyGen has the widest language list (175+ languages and dialects) and exports up to 4K from its Pro plan.
  • Synthesia lists the longest set of certifications: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and ISO 42001.
  • Team features like SSO and SCORM sit on the upper plans of every tool, so price the plan you will actually need, not the entry plan.

What are Synthesia, HeyGen and Colossyan?

All three turn a script, document or slide deck into a video presented by an AI avatar, with an AI voice in the language you choose. You skip the camera, the studio and the reshoot when a policy changes. The difference is who each product is built for.

Synthesia calls itself an "AI Video and Avatar platform for business". It makes videos from documents, PowerPoint files or links, translates and dubs them, and has added Sessions: roleplays where an avatar pushes back in a practice conversation, and survey interviews where an avatar asks follow-up questions. It targets L&D, HR, sales enablement, marketing and IT teams.

HeyGen leans toward creators, marketers and sales teams. Its homepage leads with "AI videos starring you, made in minutes", and it sells a Video Agent that turns a typed idea into a finished video, a text-based editor called AI Studio, video translation with lip sync and developer APIs. It also has an official MCP server, so an AI assistant like Claude can generate videos through it. We covered it in depth in App of the Week: HeyGen.

Colossyan focuses on workplace learning. Its homepage pitch is "Drop in any source. Watch it become training." It takes PDFs, decks, URLs, Word documents and videos and turns them into courses with quizzes, buttons and branching scenarios, then sends learner scores to an LMS through SCORM. The company is based in Budapest and was founded in 2020.

How much do Synthesia, HeyGen and Colossyan cost?

Synthesia runs on credits. Video costs 100 credits per minute and dubbing 76 credits per minute, and every plan includes the first 10 minutes of video each month. The free Basic plan gives 500 credits and watermarks your videos. Starter costs $29 a month for 1,250 credits, which Synthesia says is up to about 12 extra minutes of video, and removes the logo. Pro costs $89 a month for 6,000 credits, up to about 60 extra minutes, with larger credit tiers up to $676 a month. Enterprise is custom and includes unlimited video minutes. The page says yearly billing saves up to 4 months but does not list the yearly prices.

HeyGen also uses credits. Free gives 3 videos a month, each up to 1 minute. Creator costs $29 a month ($24 billed yearly) with 600 credits and videos up to 30 minutes at 1080p. Pro costs $49 a month with 1,000 credits and 4K export, and higher Pro tiers scale to 100,000 credits for $4,300 a month. Business costs $149 a month plus $20 per extra seat and allows 60-minute videos. Enterprise is custom with no duration limit.

Colossyan prices by minutes and seats. The free Starter plan includes 20 minutes a month with its NEO avatars, 10 interactive videos and 15 auto-translations, with 1 editor seat. Professional costs $59 a month billed yearly for 30 NEO minutes, 10 minutes of the newer NEO2 avatars, 3 editor seats, watermark removal and SCORM export, and extra members cost $30 a month each. Enterprise is custom and unlimited.

The practical point: Synthesia and HeyGen charge per creator, so a team of three on HeyGen Business already costs $189 a month. Colossyan's Professional plan includes three editors, which makes it cheaper for a small L&D team, but its minute allowance is lower.

Which is best for training and L&D teams?

Colossyan is the most training-focused of the three. Interactivity is on every plan, branching scenarios and quizzes are core features, and SCORM export starts on Professional rather than Enterprise. If your output is courses in an LMS, that alone can decide it.

Synthesia is the stronger choice for large L&D programs that also care about governance. Brand kits, live collaboration, SCORM export, SSO and 1-click translation into 140+ languages sit on Enterprise, and its roleplay Sessions let learners practice a sales call or a difficult conversation with an avatar that is scored in real time. Learner seats cost $29 per learner per month.

HeyGen can do training too. Its Business plan lists interactive video, SCORM export and LMS integrations, but it is built first for marketing and communication video.

Which is best for marketing, sales and localization?

HeyGen. It has the largest stock avatar library (700+ on paid plans), the widest language list for translation, 4K export from Pro and integrations with n8n, Make, HubSpot and Zapier on Business. Its Video Agent turns a typed idea into a share-ready video. Teams that send personalized videos at scale can use its API.

Synthesia works for marketing as well, and its dubbing covers 70+ languages on self-serve plans. Colossyan is the weakest fit here: its plans and features are designed around courses, not campaigns.

If your marketing video is mostly real footage of real people rather than avatars, a transcript-based editor like Descript may serve you better than any of the three.

What about security and data?

For many buyers, procurement decides before features do. Synthesia lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and ISO 42001 (the AI management system standard), GDPR compliance with EU data residency, and SAML/SSO plus SCIM on Enterprise. HeyGen shows SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, CCPA and EU AI Act badges, with SAML/SSO on Business and SCIM on Enterprise. Colossyan lists SOC 2 Type II and GDPR, says customer content is never used to train its models, and offers SSO/SAML and EU or US data residency on Enterprise.

Custom avatars of your own employees need extra care: get written consent, decide who may create videos with that likeness, and plan what happens when the person leaves. Our AI vendor security and procurement checklist covers the questions to send each vendor.

How to choose

  1. Start with the output. Courses in an LMS point to Colossyan or Synthesia. Short marketing, sales or social video points to HeyGen.
  2. Count editors, not viewers. If three or more people will build videos, compare Colossyan Professional against HeyGen Business and Synthesia Pro per seat.
  3. Estimate minutes per month. Credit plans look cheap until you translate everything into five languages. Multiply your finished minutes by your languages before you pick a tier.
  4. Check where SSO and SCORM sit. If IT requires SSO, you are buying HeyGen Business or the Enterprise plan of Synthesia or Colossyan.
  5. Test with your own script. All three have free plans. Make the same two-minute video in each and show the results to the people who will watch them.

Other avatar tools worth a look include Elai.io for training and explainer videos. For decks rather than video, see our guide to the best AI presentation makers, and check this week's rankings for the video tools gaining the most attention.

Bottom line

There is no single winner. HeyGen gives the most language coverage and avatar choice for marketing and sales. Colossyan gives training teams interactivity and SCORM at the lowest price for a small team. Synthesia is the safe enterprise pick when security reviews, roleplay practice and scale matter most. Run the same script through all three free plans before you commit to a year.
