What does an AI visibility tool actually measure?

These tools send a list of prompts to AI assistants on a schedule and record the answers. From that they report a few core numbers:

  • Visibility or mention rate: the share of answers that mention your brand.
  • Position: where you appear in the answer compared with competitors.
  • Sentiment: how the AI describes you.
  • Sources and citations: which pages the AI used or linked. This is often the most useful part, because it tells you which sites to earn a mention on.

Some tools add content audits, recommendations or agents that draft content. If GEO is new to you, read our guide on how to get cited by AI answer engines first. It explains what drives citations, and this guide covers how to measure them.

Profound: the enterprise platform

Profound calls itself "the AI marketing platform built for the agentic era." Its Monitor products include Answer Engine Insights, Prompt Volumes, Shopping and Agent Analytics, and its AI Marketer side adds agents and a Context Manager for producing content.

The public pricing page lists two plans. The Trial is free and tracks 50 prompts daily for 7 days on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, with unlimited seats. Enterprise is custom and covers up to 9 engines, including Perplexity, AI Mode, Copilot, DeepSeek, Claude and Exa Search, plus API access, exports and SSO.

Choose it if you are a larger brand that wants tracking, prompt volume data and content agents from one vendor and can work with a sales-led contract. We covered it in more depth in our Profound App of the Week.

Peec AI: practical tracking with unlimited users

Peec AI tracks visibility, position, sentiment and sources across AI search, and benchmarks you against competitors. It says it is "trusted by 3500+ brands and agencies." Data can go out through CSV, a Looker Studio connector, an API and MCP.

Plans are Starter (50 prompts, 1 project), Pro (150 prompts, 2 projects), Advanced (350 prompts, 5 projects) and a custom Enterprise plan with up to 13 models. Every self-serve plan includes unlimited users, daily tracking and a choice of 3 models. Extra countries and languages have no extra cost, and annual billing gets 15% off. The pricing page we fetched did not display plan prices, so check them directly before you budget.

Choose it if you want a focused tracker your whole team and your agency can log into without paying per seat.

Otterly.AI: the lowest entry price

Otterly.AI Lite costs $29 a month on monthly billing for 15 prompts, with unlimited team members and daily tracking. Standard is $189 a month for 100 prompts and adds API and MCP access, Agent Analytics and a Looker Studio connector. Premium is $489 a month for 400 prompts. Annual billing is advertised at 15% off, and subscriptions are month to month.

Base coverage is ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot. Claude, Google AI Mode and Gemini are paid add-ons, so price those in if your buyers use them.

Choose it if you want to start measuring this month for a small budget and grow the prompt set later.

Scrunch: transparent pricing for mid-market teams

Scrunch is one of the few enterprise-leaning tools that publishes prices. Starter is $300 a month month to month, or $250 a month billed annually, for 350 custom prompts and 1,000 industry prompts, 3 user licences and 3 personas. Growth is $500 a month, or $417 billed annually, for 700 custom prompts and 5 licences. Both cover ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, and Meta.

Scrunch also offers an Agent Experience Platform (AXP), which it describes as a way to generate an "AI-friendly version of your site." The pricing page does not say which plans include it.

Choose it if you need a high prompt count and persona-based tracking, and want a known price before the sales call.

Ahrefs Brand Radar: AI visibility inside your SEO suite

Ahrefs Brand Radar tracks brand visibility "across AI answers, YouTube, and Reddit." Its AI Visibility Index draws on about 475 million monthly prompts based on Ahrefs' keyword database and covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Custom Prompts adds Claude.

Custom Prompts is free on every paid Ahrefs plan from Lite up, with 5 prompts on Lite, 10 on Standard and 20 on Advanced. As an add-on it starts at $50 a month. The AI Visibility Index starts at $199 a month.

Choose it if your team already lives in Ahrefs and you want market-level AI visibility data next to your organic search data.

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: for existing Semrush teams

The Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit costs $99 a month and has no free trial. It includes a Visibility Overview with an AI Visibility Score, competitor research, prompt research with volume and intent, brand performance analysis, daily prompt tracking and an AI search site audit. Its documentation names ChatGPT and Google AI Mode.

Semrush also folds AI search into its main plans. The Starter plan lists 50 prompts tracked daily at $199 a month, or $165.17 a month billed annually, and Pro+ lists 100 prompts.

Choose it if you already pay for Semrush and want AI visibility reporting without another vendor review.

How to choose an AI visibility tool

  1. Write your prompt list first. List 30 to 100 questions your buyers ask: "best X for Y", "X vs Y", "X alternatives". The list decides which plan size you need.
  2. Check engines per plan. Several tools charge extra for Claude, Gemini or AI Mode. Match the engines to what your buyers use. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison can help you judge which assistants matter in your market.
  3. Look at sources, not only scores. A visibility score tells you where you stand. Citation data tells you what to do next.
  4. Plan how the data leaves the tool. API, MCP or Looker Studio access matters if you report GEO next to SEO and pipeline.
  5. Run a short trial on the same prompts. Results differ between tools because answers vary run to run. Compare trends, not single numbers.
  6. Run the usual vendor review. These tools see your competitive strategy. Use our AI vendor security checklist before signing an annual plan.

Bottom line

If you are starting out, Otterly.AI or the visibility features in your existing Ahrefs or Semrush plan will give you a baseline at low cost. When GEO becomes a real channel with targets, move to Peec AI for broad team access or Scrunch for higher prompt volume at a published price. Profound fits large brands that want tracking and content agents under one enterprise contract. Whatever you pick, keep the prompt list stable for a few months so the trend lines mean something.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI visibility tool?+

An AI visibility tool runs a set of prompts through AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, then reports how often your brand is mentioned, where it appears in the answer, how it is described and which sources are cited. It is the measurement layer for generative engine optimization (GEO).

What is the cheapest AI visibility tracker?+

Of the tools we checked, Otterly.AI Lite at $29 a month (monthly billing) is the lowest paid entry, with 15 prompts. Ahrefs includes 5 Custom Prompts in its paid Lite plan, and Profound offers a free 7-day trial with 50 prompts. Prices are as of October 2026.

Do I need a separate GEO tool if I already pay for Semrush or Ahrefs?+

Not always. Semrush sells an AI Visibility Toolkit for $99 a month and builds prompt tracking into its SEO and AI search plans, and Ahrefs includes Custom Prompts in paid plans. A dedicated tool makes sense when you need many prompts, more AI engines, or agent analytics and content workflows.

How many prompts should I track?+

Start with 30 to 100 prompts that mirror real buyer questions in your category: best X for Y, X vs Y, X alternatives and how-to questions. Track them daily for a month before you change content, so you have a baseline. Grow the set once you know which topics move.

Which AI engines should a B2B company track?+

At minimum ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, and Perplexity, since these are covered by every tool in this guide. Add Gemini, Copilot and Claude if your buyers use them at work. Check which engines are included in your plan and which are paid add-ons.
